Turning Bowls into Hope: Celebrating Community and Compassion

Empty Bowls Puerto Peñasco is a proud part of an internationally recognized grassroots movement of ceramic artists working to combat hunger through creativity and compassion. Our mission is simple but powerful: to raise funds and provide resources and assistance to those facing food insecurity in our community. Every contribution goes to providing vital support to neighbors in need. Each handcrafted bowl and every community event represent our mission.

In Puerto Peñasco, during December, January, and February, seasonal job layoffs create significant economic hardship, compounded by unpredictable challenges like border closings, and reduced tourism. Recognizing this, we introduced the Empty Bowls concept in February 2024 with an inaugural event hosted at The Turquoise Door in San Miguel Plaza. The event not only introduced this concept to our town but also provided critical relief during a time of great need. It was a moment of solidarity, and its success showcased our commitment to addressing immediate food insecurity and laid the foundation for a larger annual tradition.

On November 30, 2024, we held our First Annual Empty Bowls event at The American Legion Post 15 Mexico, uniting area artists, chefs, bakers, musicians, and local businesses. Artists contributed stunning bowls, chefs and bakers crafted delicious soups, breads and desserts, and the community showed up in full force. With donor support, we sold 381 tickets, brought 350 attendees, and raised over $4,000 through a silent auction, helping provide food staples for families in need. These funds are already making an immediate tangible impact, providing food for 100 families and ongoing support for our most vulnerable neighbors, including those facing extraordinary hardships like cancer treatment.

But this is just the beginning. Your generosity is the heart of this mission. Our work continues because of your support. Every $20 contribution directly funds local food purchases and distributions, proving that small acts of kindness can create lasting change, ensuring that children, seniors, and families in Puerto Peñasco receive the help they need.

We believe in the power of community. With your help, we are building a tradition of neighbors helping neighbors, ensuring every neighbor has food on their table and that no one in Puerto Peñasco has to face hunger alone. Together, we can turn empty bowls into a symbol of hope and compassion.

"Empty Bowls" is an internationally recognized grassroots movement by ceramic artists around the world to raise money for food organizations. This money is used to address hunger-related issues in their own communities. Most Empty Bowls events are held in November in conjunction with World Hunger Day.

After the very successful February 2024 inaugural event in Puerto Peñasco, The Turquoise Door did a Call For Volunteers to create a much larger annual Fall event in Peñasco.  Area artists are contributing unique bowls, local restaurants are providing soup and breads, and local musicians the pleasure of their talents. This event is the humble beginning of something meaningful for neighbors helping neighbors.
